MMA in workshop on enhancing South-South Cooperation

The Workshop on "Enhancing South South Cooperation on Climate Action and Sustainable Development" was held in Rabat, Morocco (July 26-27) with the main objective to present current cooperation activities on the climate change action and sustainable development agenda and to share experiences among developing countries.

The event provided the opportunity to the developing countries share information and experiences on national approaches to cooperation in the context of sustainable development and the implementation of the Paris Agreement, discuss the challengers, needs and opportunities that go along with low emissions and climate resilient development, identify opportunities for enhanced cooperation, as well as how leveraging finance and further seeks to explore best practices and areas for future cooperation.

Following presentation on the different issues related to NCD in the present times by Mr. Bernd Hackmann, UNFCCC Secretariat, the event had the vision from Brazil based into four action lines (Forest Cover Monitoring; Developing Evidence Based Integrated Public Policy; Measuring, Reporting and Verifying REDD+ results and developing REDD+ technical documents to be submitted to the UNFCCC; and Governance Structure and National Funds for REDD+) presented by the Environmental Analyst, Rafael Brito Pereira, from the Department for Forests and Combating Deforestation and the Climate Change and Forests Secretariat of the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment.

The Brazilian proposal for South South Cooperation and the technical expertise of the country were highlighted by Mr. Donald Cooper, Director, UNFCCC Secretariat, as an opportunity for other developing countries. The next steps discussions will be in a broader meeting on South South cooperation to be organized before COP 23.
