Thematic Advisory Board on the Safeguards

The ad hoc Thematic Advisory Board on the Safeguards will work to develop inputs to support the National REDD+ Committee in overseeing if the REDD+ safeguards are being addressed and respected throughout the implementation of REDD+ by Brazil.

This Advisory Board will focus on supporting the National REDD+ Committee in:

i) the conceptualization of the REDD+ safeguards in the Brazilian context;

ii) the development of the Safeguards Information System;

iii) reviewing the summary of information on the safeguards;

iv) defining a procedure to allow reporting of safeguards violations;

v) developing a safeguards related capacity building plan.

The Thematic Advisory Board on the Safeguards is composed of 30 members. The selection of the members was based on the criteria set by the National REDD+ Committee to include:

a) indigenous people’s, traditional communities’, and smallholders’ representatives;

b) specialists in biodiversity

c) specialists in socioenvironmental topics;

d) specialists in transparency and forest governance;

e) specialists in environmental monitoring;

f) specialists in climate change and forests related public policies;

g) representatives from communities affected by forest carbon projects;

h) implementation and beneficiaries of REDD+ results-based payments initiatives.

The ad hoc Thematic Advisory Board on the Safeguards operated from July 2016 to September 2018, having had its duration extended by the National REDD+ Committee through Resolution no 11 (Portuguese only).
