Green Climate Fund approves US$ 500 Million to REDD+ Initiatives in the Amazon Basin
Sarney Filho: "Amazon needs structural actions"
Environment Minister José Sarney Filho remarked on Tuesday (september 3rd), during a meeting with representatives from states in the Legal Amazon, that the funds from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) should start operating to meet the needs of protection and sustainable management of the forests. “Only then forests can keep providing key environmental services”, Sarney Filho said.
Also during the meeting the secretary for Climate Change and Forests Everton Lucero, announced that the Green Climate Fund (GCF) had dedicated US$ 500 million to developing countries that obtained emissions reduction from deforestation and forest degradation through a pilot programme for REDD+ results-based payments.
The GCF rules stipulate that no country can receive more than 30% (USD 150 million) of the total available. In Brazil, according to the rules set by the National REDD+ Committee, Resolution nº 6, only the federal government and states in the Legal Amazon can access these funds, which must be directed to public polices and forest protection initiatives.
